WordPress

WordPress is a very adaptable content management system that has made blogging free and accessible to everyone. This section explains what WordPress is and how it works which will be very helpful to your business or a personal blog.

What is WordPress?

WordPress at it’s basic level is a blogging tool created by an open source community. WordPress features and main strengths are it’s easy of use from setup to creation of content and it’s cutting edge adaptability.  WordPress integrates additional software and programs through plugins which download seamlessly.  These free plugins introduce almost any functionality you would need on a website:

  • e-commerce
  • security
  • SEO (SEO explained)

Why choose WordPress

WordPress can be Simple to use or Technical

WordPress is very popular because it caters for people of all technical abilities and competes with various blogging platforms and software.  To be competitive and cater for all levels WordPress comes in two flavours WordPress.com and WordPress.org.

WordPress.com

WordPress.com is a blogging website where you can sign up and join for free.  You don’t need any technical knowhow and you can begin writing straight away.  This method is ideal for the less technical bloggers or people with less time, plus it’s free.  There are limitations compared with WordPress.org and it also means your domain name will also have wordpress.com at the end, (so my address would be www.briancee.wordpress.com) There are also additional services that require small payment (e.g. high quality video streaming) but these are very cheap and worth the cost.  That said you do not have to pay for a domain name or web hosting everything is free.  check out WordPress.com

WordPress.org

This is the WordPress opensource software meaning it’s free and is constantly updated. There is a process when using this software you will have to follow: You will need to have; a domain name, web hosting and FTP (file transfer protocol) software to transfer the software to your host.  Don’t let this put you off, many hosting services have a cpanel (bunch of free services) which already has WordPress and at the click of a button WordPress can be installed. Plus to upload plugins, templates, images, music and video you can use the default WordPress upload tools without using FTP.
