Twitter – Microblogs

Microblogging

This section explains in plain English what Microblogging is and how it differs from other social networking technologies.  There are also some pointers about privacy issues and mobile (Cell) phone charges.

Microblog – Networking Tool

Microblogging is a networking tool, where users can post a message normally 140 characters to an online service, such as Twitter, and Jaiku. The size of the message was designed around text messaging which makes these services ideal to use from mobile (cell) phones, portable devices and computers.

Messages are viewed publicly, in groups or privately with all interested parties being notified straight away. This instant messaging allows members of these communities to communicate in real-time and have conversations or pass information text, links, images and video instantly.

Having this level of communication is very powerful and is a very easy way to spread your message and receive benefits from these services.

  • friends can stay in touch instantly
  • businesses can interact with customers. The volume of free commercial tools that enable promotion, customer service, customer feedback is something every business can use. See Twitter for Business.
  • visitors can get real-time news as latest events get reported from news to industry
  • Links to articles, reports, case studies all get highlighted on these services. These links may never appear or are very hidden in the search engines.

Microblog Caution

Privacy

Due to the open nature of these online communities be aware that many people can read what you upload, don’t write something you may regret (e.g. personal information, personal details). Read the terms and conditions of the service before you sign up.

Mobile (Cell) Phone Charges

Be aware of your mobile (cell) phone charges as these services are free but you are sending a text and may get charged. Certain countries on Twitter have free numbers they can text to but this depends on the Mobile (Cell) phone network provider. See Free Numbers for Twitter.  Don’t forget you can use the services for free on a computer.

If you are lucky enough to have a phone with internet access (don’t forget internet charges) or a Smart phone you can connect for free. I use an application called Twitroid for Twitter on my Android mobile, but there are lots for each different Mobile phone manufacturer.
